    Tree Top Launches “America’s Best Firehouse BBQ Cook-Off”

    Firehouses From Around the U.S. Invited to Compete for $10,000 by Entering Best BBQ Recipe Using Tree Top Products

    SELAH, WA - April 27, 2011 — Firehouses of America, it’s time to turn up the heat and get cookin’ for a chance to win $10,000 in America’s Best Firehouse BBQ Cook-Off presented by Tree Top.

    Tree Top, the only major brand of apple juice made from 100 percent USA apples, is inviting firehouses from around the nation to enter their most delicious, mouth-watering BBQ recipes using its products. By entering, firehouses will get a chance to win a $10,000 grand prize for their firehouse or to share with their favorite charity. The contest launches April 27 and runs through May 22.

    “Tree Top products are incredibly versatile and competitive BBQ cookers frequently use apple juice or apple sauce to marinate, moisten and flavor meats and recipes,” said Sharon Miracle, corporate communications manager for Tree Top. “The America’s Best Firehouse BBQ Cook-Off brings together an all-American combo — our everyday beloved heroes and apples. So firehouses, heat up the grill and start flipping, filleting or doing whatever it takes to create a crowd-pleasing recipe to best represent your firehouse.”

    To enter America’s Best Firehouse BBQ Cook-Off, firehouses must simply log onto www.AmericasBestFirehouseBBQ.com and:

    •Submit their best BBQ recipe using Tree Top apple juice or apple sauce;
    •Tell us a bit about their firehouse;
    •Why their recipe’s the best; and
    •Their plans for the grand prize.

    The top 10 finalists will be sent a Tree Top-branded Flip video camera and a gift package complete with a variety of Tree Top juice, apple sauce and fun BBQ accessories to compete in the final round. Finalists will record up to a four minute video in which they will try to convince America and the judges that their firehouse — and recipe — are the best and most deserving of the $10,000 prize. The judging panel consists of Tree Top CEO Tom Stokes, Audra Lowe from BetterTV and BBQ Addicts, authors of “BBQ Makes Everything Better.” Beginning June 23 through July 29, America will be invited to vote online for their favorite!

    Official entry rules available at www.americasbestfirehousebbq.com.

    Valley of the Dolls

    Considering all the time that we PR folk spend in front of our computers, it’s sometimes nice to slide away from the desktop and tackle a creative project that requires you to be a little more hands on – especially on a Friday – a sunny, beautiful Friday.

    Enter the media mailer.

    With a glue gun in hand and an open mind, we put together such a mailer for the Heathman Hotel in Kirkland, Wash., and wanted to share our fabulous results!

    fathers-day-media-mailer_2-2We realize that the project, featuring a very boyish looking Ken doll, does require a little explanation, which we’re more than happy to provide.

    The goal of the mailer is to draw the media’s attention to the Heathman Hotel’s “Pick Your Dad” Father’s Day package. The package offers four options for the different types of dads out there – the Metrosexual Dad, the Outdoor Dad, the Extreme Sports Dad and the Couch Potato Dad.

    We’re pretty excited about the way Ken – I mean Dad – turned out and frankly, we’re sad to see him be shipped off to the media. But we know he’ll do a fantastic job promoting the Heathman in his pink polo and killer shades.

    Vancouver Business Journal Interviews Wendy Lane Stevens, President of LANE PR, to Analyze Crisis Management Techniques

    Imagining the worst, gleaning the best
    April 15, 2011
    By J. Maury Harris

    Tragedies happen every day in life. Wildfires rage, executives resign, planes crash, food is contaminated and money is extorted. In the business world, tragedy is defined as a crisis – a stage in a sequence of events at which the trend of all future events (for better or for worse) is determined.

    According to Wendy Lane Stevens, president of Portland-based Lane PR, properly managing such crises vastly improves a company’s chances of emerging from any debacle on the better end of things.

    “It’s a very dynamic environment,” Stevens said. “If you’re not prepared to get your message out correctly and quickly, it may be very detrimental to your company name or your ability to do business.”

    To prevent or lessen the impact these threats can inflict on an organization and its stakeholders, a company should research and implement proper crisis management techniques.

    A Frog, A Mad Cow, and a Dragon Walk into a Bar…

    cup_small1Everyone who sits within laughing distance of me at LANE PR knows how much I enjoy working on the Dutch Bros. Coffee account.

    I mean, you gotta love a company who strives to—and succeeds at—being much more than a place to get your morning coffee.

    From charity events to giveaways, Dutch Bros. is dedicated to giving back to their local communities, and they’ve achieved somewhat of a cult following (hey, don’t take my word for it, over 100,000 people can’t be wrong—they just reached that milestone on their Facebook fan page!).

    And now, they aim to entertain: This month, the coffee company introduces its first full-length comic book, Dutch Bros. Freedom Fighters.

    The cast of characters will be familiar to Dutch Bros. fans—the popular Dutch Mafia, Fro and Mullet characters join an eclectic line-up featuring a female superhero (!), a dragon who wakes up on the wrong side of the bed without his morning coffee, an evil Mad Cow, and his martial-arts-trained frog sidekick.

    All 159 Dutch Bros. locations are distributing them for free throughout the month of April. See you there!
