Why Social Media is Perfect for Banks

At a financial services communications event last week, I sat in on a talk from Citi’s social media guru, Frank Eliason, who has a book coming out entitled “At Your Service” in Spring 2012.

Frank caught my attention when he stated that social media is a perfect fit for banks. Why does he believe this?

    • Banks were historically about communities.
    • Social media is about being part of a community.
    • Right now people believe the banking industry has lost sight of its customers. Banks need to build trust now.
    • How can a bank build trust effectively?  Answer: Human interaction. Social media enables banks to do that.

Citi isn’t just using social media channels to address questions and have conversations about a customer’s banking needs and issues. Citi employees participate in social media in ways that have nothing to do with banking as well. The goal is to humanize Citi’s customer service reps, so you’ll see posts from Citi employees on sites such as weather.com.  Because everyone likes to talk about the weather.

Burgerville Launches “Shakers Sessions” with the help of Portland’s music community

Collaboration is a great thing!  Recently LANE PR client, Burgerville, teamed up with The Brian Grant Foundation and local singer/songwriter Rob Barteletti to present “Shakers Sessions,” a compilation CD benefiting the Brian Grant Foundation.

The album was created by Barteletti, who was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2002. Wanting to make a benefit album for Parkinson’s patients, Barteletti recruited 12 Northwest vocalists to record the songs he wrote for the CD including Storm Large, Pete Droge, and Mike Coykendall.

untitled1Burgerville’s CEO Jeff Harvey has always had a personal passion for music and rallied the Burgerville team to be the distributor for “Shakers Sessions.”

Together, Burgerville, the Brian Grant Foundation, Barteletti and Portland’s music community pooled their time, talent, energy and most of all passion for music and supporting the community to make a great CD and a difference for those with Parkinson’s disease.

And of course LANE PR was there to make sure the media captured the launch party including KGW’s Joe Smith who interviewed the CD’s producer, Rob Stroup and CD creator Barteletti.

World Casual: The Future of American Menus

This was the title of the recent Worlds of Flavor Conference I attended at the Culinary Institute of America.  The three-day event highlighted next generation flavors and culinary strategies from Europe and the Mediterranean to Asia, Africa and Latin America.

Attracting more than 500 food professionals, the conference’s “casual menu” theme was the natural outgrowth of a long economic downturn coupled with an increasingly food savvy public.

The speakers were exciting.  They ranged from Paula Wolfert, America’s foremost authority on eastern Mediterranean food; and Chandra Ram, the editor of Plate; to Jim Poris, a senior editor at Food Arts and Rick Bayless, the chef-owner of Frontera Grill, Topolobampo, and XOCO in Chicago.

It was refreshing to see restaurants pull inspiration from Asian noodles, eastern Mediterranean tangines, North African maghrebis (sandwiches) and Spanish tortillas (potent-egg omelets) into their menus.  Diverse colors, textures and flavors were all being combined within one menu.  The orientation, however, remained on fresh, local and simply prepared foods.  Many of these dishes were paired with flavorful Spanish wines which provide a complete spectrum of taste, color and style.  Many are also priced well for more casual meals.

Here are a few of my favorite photos from the conference.

    10 Wines for Thanksgiving (Bagratioini) - Huffington Post - November 17, 2011

I know when the holidays are nearing because of the massive number of pitches, press releases and (a small amount) of wine start coming in. I’ve been getting these since before Halloween, just like the department stores putting out Christmas decorations super early. Much of the wine is Pinot Noir. I certainly understand that. It’s a safe and expected choice.

Not knocking Pinot here, but I like to introduce my guests to interesting wines, wines that you might not otherwise try with a holiday dinner. One year my pick was a Pinot Meunier, a wine that is mostly blended into Champagne. It was a big hit. So no Pinot Noir or Chardonnay here, just my top 10 recommendations to try along with the turkey, stuffing and pumpkin pie. All the wines, except for a big splurge on a Sauternes from Chateau Coutet (hey, it’s the holidays), sell for $25 and less.

    1. Seguras Viudas Brut Rosé NV ($10). Start the holiday on a festive note with a pink sparkler.  Seguras Viudas makes some of the best value bubbles around.  This brut rosé is made from Trepat and Garnacha grapes (no Pinot Noir here!) in the Cava region of Spain.

    2. Bagrationi 2007 Reserve Brut ($25). This sparkling wine hails from Georgia — not the state but the country.  Bagrationi says this is the oldest wine producing area in the world, dating back 7000 years.  This vintage bubbly is made in the traditional method used in Champagne, and is fruit forward with tiny bubbles.  It’s made from a whole lota grapes you’ve never heard of. A fun wine to try. (Received as a sample.)
